Nusantara Mythology as a Green Education Medium: The Implementation of Jagapati Bumi in Earth-Caring Learning for Elementary School Students

Abstract

This study aims to implement the ecological values embedded in the Jagapati Bumi myth for fifth-grade students at SD N 1 Banyuasri through learning activities under the theme Love the Earth. The study employed a mixed-methods approach. The qualitative method was used to identify and describe the ecological values contained in the Jagapati Bumi myth, while the quantitative method was employed to examine the effectiveness of implementing these ecological values in improving students' understanding of how to care for the Earth. Data on the ecological values were collected through intensive reading of the Jagapati Bumi myth, followed by identifying and analyzing the ecological values embedded in the narrative. Data on the effectiveness of implementing these ecological values were collected through observation, documentation, and tests. The qualitative data were analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were analyzed using inferential statistics, specifically the t-test. The findings revealed six major ecological values embedded in the Jagapati Bumi myth: ecological balance, conservation and sustainability, environmental ethics and responsibility, the spirituality and sacredness of nature, local wisdom, and biodiversity. Furthermore, the implementation of these ecological values proved effective in enhancing students' understanding of how to care for the Earth. This was evidenced by the results of the non-parametric Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test, which yielded a test statistic of 336.5 with a p-value of 0.0000000312 (well below 0.05). These findings indicate a highly significant difference between the students' pre-test and post-test scores.
